Ways to Avoid Flu and Colds This Winter

If you don’t try to prevent flu this season, odds are that it’ll catch you. Flu and colds come with winter and if you don’t want to spend the chilly months battling a fever, nagging cough or runny nose, you must try your best not to get sick. In this post, we’ll discuss a few things you can do to minimize your chance of catching flu and colds this winter.
1. Keep Warm
There is a reason granny told you to wear warm clothes – keeping warm throughout the season can help you stay safe from coughs, flu and colds. Altered levels of hormones like serotonin and melatonin and less sunlight negatively affects the performance of our immune system. Almost 30 percent of the body heat is lost through the head. This makes wearing a hat essential.
2. Wash Your Hands
The viruses responsible for causing flu and coughs spread through the spray that occurs when an ill person talks, coughs or sneezes. The virus gets airborne and enters our body through the mouth, nose or from the hands after we touch an object that has been contaminated with virus. For example, if you are sharing a computer or phone with someone, or touch door handles and you put your hands on your face, the virus may enter your nose or mouth. Therefore, make a habit of washing your hands often.
3. Sleep Soundly
Doctors say that lack of sleep can make people more prone to viruses. However, it’s not about sleeping for more time. It’s more about the quality of sleep. Some people don’t even get seven hours’ of sleep, yet they still don’t suffer. A person’s moods can also affect their ability to avoid infections. If you are stressed, you’re more likely to get sick compared to when you are feeling happy, buoyant and relaxed.
4. Work Out
Regular physical activity is important, especially in the cold winter season. Regular exercise not only keeps our blood circulation going, but also increases natural killer cells in the body. These cells scavenge foreign invaders like viruses and bacteria to protect us from cold and flu.
5. Clean and Sanitize Surfaces
It is essential that you clean and sanitize objects and surfaces within your home as flu causing viruses can survive on a surface for about 24 hours. By cleaning and sanitizing surface, you can remove the viruses to ensure that they don’t make their way inside your body. If electronic devices such as cell phones and computers can withstand the disinfecting liquid, then make sure to use it on them.
