Urgent Care vs. Emergency Room
Tuesday, September 18, 2018

Do you know the difference between the emergency room and urgent care offices?  It’s important to know when it’s better to go to one rather than the other.

While it’s obvious that severe or live-threatening injuries require going to the emergency room, many people end up going to the emergency room for illnesses, pains, or relatively small injuries that could easily be handled by an urgent care office. The difference could cost you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. The problem is that people may be unsure what urgent care facilities are capable of handling, or they simply aren’t aware of them.

Another aspect to consider when choosing between the emergency room and urgent care is the amount of time that you’ll be waiting to be treated. While it may sound surprising, emergency rooms are often slower than urgent care facilities when it comes to treatment. This is largely due to an over-burdened health care system that is the result of people not being aware of urgent care facilities. Since most people simply go to the ER regardless of severity, it not only takes longer for you to receive the treatment you need, but it could also delay treatment for those with more severe injuries (or your appointment could get pushed back even further).

As stated before, those with more serious injuries should absolutely head for the ER. If you’re unsure if your injury or illness would be better served by an urgent care facility, though, feel free to contact your local Doctors' Urgent Care Office. We’re open 7 days a week and dedicated to providing you the best medical assistance possible.
