Choose One: Four Options for Turning Your Health Around
Wednesday, March 16, 2016
If you’re trying to lose weight in order to improve your health, good for you! But you may want to take a minute to check in with some interesting research about lowering your risk of premature death—regardless of the numbers on the bathroom scale.
According to research published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, adopting even one of these four healthy habits will do your body more good than losing weight to fit into a smaller pants size.
More Fruits, More Veggies
Only 14% of us are eating enough vegetables, and fruits don’t fair much better at 18% of the adult population eating enough. The USDA recommends between 5 and 13 servings daily, which means there’s plenty of room for improvement. A few easy ways to get more fruits and veggies in your diet include: make a healthy, fruit-filled smoothie each morning, add a veggie-heavy salad to your lunch, snack on crudités instead of chips throughout the day, make sure dinner always includes a vegetable side, and turn to fruits whenever craving a sweet.
More than one drink per day for women and two for men is too much if you want to protect your health. If you indulge regularly in more than that, cut back and your organs will thank you.
Shoot for moderate to challenging workouts 3 – 4 times a week and you’ll drastically improve your chances of escaping health related illnesses and premature death. Walk the dog, bike to the store, or run up the staircase at home or work for 30 minutes. Join a gym, swim some laps, or pair up with a friend and try a new class. There are plenty of ways to work exercise into your routine. Don’t let excuses get in the way of protecting your health.
Smokers run the highest risk of lung and heart disease, and increase their chances of dozens of other life-threatening ailments. If you smoke, now’s the best time to quit, and if you don’t, there’s never a reason to start.
